Nestled amidst the verdant landscapes of West Sikkim, the Rabdentse Ruins stand as a testament to the Sikkim’s rich history and cultural heritage. Once the flourishing capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim, Rabdentse now offers visitors a glimpse into its storied past through its evocative remnants.
A Glimpse into History
Established in 1670 by the second Chogyal (king) of Sikkim, Tensung Namgyal, Rabdentse served as the kingdom’s capital until 1814. During its tenure as the political and cultural hub, the city witnessed significant events that shaped Sikkim’s history. However, in the late 18th century, invading forces from Nepal (Gurkha army) led to its destruction, leaving behind the ruins that we see today.
Exploring Rabdentse Ruins
Located on the Pelling–Geyshing road, about 3 km from Pelling town, the ruins can be accessed through an ornamental yellow gate that also serves as the entry to Pelling Bird Park. One ticket covers both attractions.
- Entry Fee: INR 100 per person
- Car Parking: INR 50
After entering, you will walk through a beautiful garden before reaching a forked path. The left route leads to the Bird Park, while the right trail takes you to Rabdentse Ruins.

Upon arrival, several significant structures await your exploration:
Palace Ruins: The remnants of the royal palace are divided into northern and southern wings. The northern wing housed the royal family and includes an open quadrangle where the “Dab Lhagang” once stood—a space designated for offering prayers. Adjacent to the palace are three well-preserved chortens, where the royal family offered incense to their deities.
Namphogang Throne: A stone throne comprising three standing stones, believed to be the platform from which judges delivered their verdicts during the kingdom’s zenith.
Taphap Chorten: Serving as the traditional entrance to the palace, this chorten (stupa) marked the point where visitors would dismount and pay respects before entering the royal precincts.
