Laitlum Canyon is a breathtaking yet less-explored natural wonder in the East Khasi Hills near Shillong.

The name “Laitlum” means “end of the hills,” and as you stand at this amazing cliffside, you’ll understand the reason!

The panoramic views of curved green hills, deep valleys, and the floating clouds make Laitlum Canyon a true dreamland for nature lovers seeking peace and beauty.

Unlike the crowded tourist spots in Meghalaya, Laitlum Canyon remains a peaceful retreat where you can truly connect with nature. After a 1.5-hour scenic drive from Shillong, you’ll find yourself at the edge of the cliffs, watching a stunning canyon view where only a few visitors gather. This untouched gem offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of Shillong city life.

Laitum Canyon - wide range

One of the most magical sights at Laitlum is how the black clouds often drift lazily over the canyon, creating a mystical atmosphere. When the clouds depart and the sunlight touches the curving hills, the landscape transforms into something out of a fairytale. Whether you’re a photographer, an adventure seeker, or simply looking for a quiet escape, Laitlum Canyon delivers an unforgettable experience.

Experience the Serenity of Laitlum Canyon

If you’re someone who cherishes quiet moments in nature, Laitlum Canyon is the perfect place. Spend 2-3 peaceful hours here, soaking in the breathtaking views, feeling the cool mountain breeze, and watching the dancing clouds around the hills.

While many commercial tourists flock to more popular spots in Meghalaya, Laitlum remains off the beaten path. Even local tour operators often overlook this spectacular site—a mystery that works in favor of those seeking a serene escape. This less-explored paradise is ideal for visitors who want to avoid the crowds and immerse themselves in Meghalaya’s natural beauty.

Life at the Edge of the World

Laitlum Canyon isn’t just about the views—it also tells a story of resilience. At the bottom of the canyon lies a small village, connected to the world above by a staggering 3000+ stone steps. Villagers make the climb daily for work and essential supplies. A ropeway also transports urgent goods in the villages between canyons.

What’s even more remarkable (and pathetic) is that local children trek these 3000+ steps every day to attend school! Their daily journey through this rugged terrain reflects the incredible spirit of the community living at the “edge of the hills”.

How to Reach Laitlum Canyon

  • By Air: Fly to Shillong Airport (Umroi Airport), located about 35 km from Laitlum. Alternatively, you can fly to Guwahati Airport; the next morning, travel to Laitlum Canyon, 3 hours away by road.
  • Nearest Railway Station: Railway track is still absent in Meghalaya, even after 76th year of independence of the nation INDIA! This happened most probably to completely disconnect the unwanted entry of Bangladeshi people to enter and reach the center of India! The nearest railway station is Guwahati.

I can visit this place any time of the year, though it is suggested to avoid visiting during peak monsoons as the area becomes slippery and foggy, reducing visibility.

The best time to visit Laitlum Canyon is from March to May and October to February when the weather is pleasant and the sky remais clear. During these months, you can enjoy the lush greenery and the best panoramic views.
