The Rimbi Orange Garden and Rimbi River are two beautiful spots near Pelling that you can explore in a single visit. In fact, the prime tourist attraction, Sewaro Rock Garden (rocky terrain on Rimbi River), lies at the hill foot of the Orange Garden. Surrounded by the serene landscapes of West Sikkim, these locations offer you a tranquil retreat amidst nature’s splendor.
Let’s explore the place without wasting time.
Exploring Rimbi Orange Garden
Located approximately 13 kilometers from Pelling, the Rimbi Orange Garden, also known as the Sewaro Rock Garden, is a government-funded orchard renowned for its vibrant orange trees. As you stroll through lanes adorned with orange and cardamom plants, you’ll find the place especially enchanting during the harvest season when the trees are laden with ripe, juicy oranges. The garden also features a variety of flowering plants, adding to its charm.
Entry fee: Rs. 10 per person
Walking through the orange garden, you can admire the well-maintained plantations and even taste some fresh fruit during the harvest season (October to December), but NOT for FREE. They sell the fresh oranges in exchange of very reasonable price; however, if you pick an orange without permission and get caught, you might have to pay a fine of INR 500.
Apart from fresh oranges, you can also buy homemade organic products, including fruit juices, pickles, and more, as souvenirs. If you’re feeling hungry, grab some snacks and tea at the Orange Garden’s stall/ restaurant.
Reach Sewaro Rock Garden from Rimbi Orange Garden
At the foot of the Orange Garden, you’ll find the rocky stretch of the Rimbi River, known as the Sewaro Rock Garden. This is a great spot where you can sit on the large rocks by the riverbank, soak in the beauty of the flowing water, and take memorable photos. The sound of the river, the cool breeze, and the scenic surroundings make it the perfect place to unwind.
Tasting Organic Juices and Wines
On the Rimbi River bank, at Sewaro Rock Garden, visitors can find local stalls selling a variety of organic juices and locally made wines. These beverages are crafted from fresh, handpicked fruits such as oranges, passion fruit, and guava, rhododendron, etc., offering a refreshing taste of Sikkim’s natural products. The wines, in particular, are made using traditional fermentation methods, creating rich flavors that capture the essence of the region. You can enjoy tasting these local delicacies, making it a delightful part of the visit.
About Rimbi River
The Rimbi Chu (“Chu” means “River” in Tibetan) flows through the West Sikkim region, providing an essential water source for the locals. Unlike the common belief that it originates from Rimbi Falls, the river actually flows from the Rathong Chu (River) far to the north.
For your safety, keep in mind that Rimbi River is not suitable for swimming due to its strong currents and rocky bed. Instead, sit by the riverbank, dip your feet in the cool water, and enjoy a peaceful time in nature.
Rimbi Falls
Apart from Rimbi River, Rimbi Orange Garden, and Sewaro Rock Garden, you can explore another tourist spot on the way—Rimbi Falls. If you start your journey from Pelling, it lies approximately 1.5 km before the Rimbi Orange Garden.
This roadside waterfall is a nice place to spend some moments and snap some photos, though it may not be as impressive if you have already visited Kanchenjunga Waterfalls. Since it’s along the way, make sure to stop at Rimbi Falls, preferably before heading to Kanchenjunga Waterfalls.
